Over the weekend Tracee Ellis Ross received an honorary doctorate from Brown University.

The Black-ish matriarch earned a degree in theater from Brown University in 1994.
Ross explained why her alma mater recognized her with an honorary doctorate.
In my degree it says I was honored because of my 'grace, talent and strong sense of self….work that combines detailed knowledge of human nature with boldness…a passion for facilitating self-expression and broadening the definition of what is beautiful…dedication to helping others particularly teenage girls, find their inner strength, confidence and pathways to satisfaction…creating common ground with women of all backgrounds… And a continued desire to push the boundaries of imagination.
Of the six honorees chosen, Ross was the youngest and the only person of color. On her website she shared the names of the five people who were honored alongside her:

My daughter, Kingsley, when she was just a year old. Its so cute to see her so little.

A Blue Moon! I love beer! Especially with the orange in the ice-cold glass — it's the best!
What's the one word you are guilty of using too often?
"Pretty." LOL I can't help it — "pretty" just works for almost everything: people, places and things.
What is the last thing you searched for on Google?
Spider-Man birthday gifts for little girls. One of my girlfriends' daughters is having a Spider-Man themed party. You go, girl! Why not?
Who is the last person that called or texted you?
My husband, Josh, just called; he is done with his work drinks and on to his work dinner. We had a quick catchup about our day.
What was the last awkward situation you were in and how did you handle it?
I was invited to a party that was an intimate get-together — or so I thought. I arrived in jeans and a T-shirt, no makeup, to a full red carpet and press! UGH. I wanted to crawl in a hole!!
When is the last time you went to a theater?
Last weekend with the kids, Sponge Bob for the third time with the kids, this time 3D. I love the movies!

MAD MEN. I am obsessed. Don Draper is so dreamy and I love Betty's "housewife" style.

Hoarders! I just can't seem to turn it off. I am invested and really need to see the after.

The oldest thing in my closet is probably '80s Chanel jackets and my mom's '80s belts.
What's the newest?
A pair of Aquazzura heels.
What's your "color"?
I think I'm supposed to say pink but it's not pink. I feel like I'm such a pink person but I don't wear much pink I guess, I guess I wear a lot of white.
What did you get just because it was pretty but you haven't worn it once/ a lot?
Way too many times, my entire closet is stuff I think is cool but that I never actually wear. I have a baby pink Chanel boy bag that I've worn five times.
Which item most represents your style?
I feel like my vintage pink Chanel jacket represents my style very much because it's very classic but still fun because it's like bubblegum pink and has gold big buttons and I love gold. I think it's a total "Roxy" piece.

Be yourself. I think you should be your own style. Don't copy some blogger or some Instagram girl. Do whatever you think is cool for you. Because I think that's when people are the most drawn to you.

Sandals and socks. Fucking kills me. It is not OK ever. Ever. And I also think it bugs me when every girl copies what Kim [Kardashian] wears. Like no, have your own sense of style. It looks amazing on her but what's your vibe, you know?

Heels. Always. I'm 5'1" — I have to.

I think it's pencil skirt and a tight blouse or a tight shirt.

Jeans cuffed with heels, and a cute top or a sweater. Or I love a floral dress. I'm definitely a floral dress girl and like a little skirt girl so it just depends on my mood. I also love leopard.
What's your traveling/ airport outfit?
Always ends up being my Isabel Marant sneakers. Like no matter what, I always end up in them. Because they're comfortable and then you can walk to the gross bathroom with them and not feel gross. Like, never a sandal on a plane.
What's the best thing about your closet?
I'm super organized so the fact that I have one closet for each item of clothing is really easy for me. I have one shoe closet, one dress, one jacket closet, and my normal daytime closet so it works with my crazy head.

I love shopping at Barney's, and Neiman's and I love Bergdorf's. I'm a department store girl. One stop.

I'm continually cleaning my closet out, like every two months and I take it to Goodwill immediately.

Every two months.
What's a "must have" for every closet?
I think a must-have is a good open toe sandal, a good pointy toe, a good pair of jeans, a leather pant, and a black blazer.
